For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
1 Peter 1:18-19 (NIV)

In several places in the Scriptures the word “redeemed” is used interchangeably with the word “ransomed”.  The word “ransomed” is a word we often hear these days in connection with terrorism, pirates, and kidnappers seeking ransom for their victims. They demand ransoms ranging from millions of dollars to tens of millions of dollars, depending on the status of their catch. In some poorer nations I have heard of ransoms even less five thousand dollars.  So the amount of ransom paid portrays the value of the target. In the New Testament the ransom paid for your individual personal freedom is the Blood of Jesus. Not even the whole wealth on earth was enough to ransom your soul. That is how valuable you are!!!! Amen.
